Computing at Welbourne

Computer skills are taught to all year groups for 1 hour a week. Children use a range of software for data handling, designing, modelling controlling, presenting and using text, graphics and music. Key Stage 2 children are taught how to use the email system correctly.
Children need to be experienced in the practical uses of Computers to make the most of their education.
Welbourne is a Google Apps for Education School and all children have a GAFE account
Here at Welbourne we strongly believe in the power of Computing as a tool for learning across all curriculum areas. 
We believe it is important that children are readied for employment and leisure in a world in which Technology plays a large part. Therefore it is a policy of the school to integrate Computing into teaching and learning in all subjects across both key stages. Computing is a major strength of our school and is a key tool for motivating children and for raising standards.


Why should our pupils learn Computing?

Computing is concerned with the storage, processing, presentation and communication of information by electronic means. Technology continues to evolve very quickly and has now become firmly entrenched in many aspects of everyday life, both at home and in the workplace.

As technology underpins today’s modern lifestyle it is essential that all pupils gain the confidence and ability, to prepare them for the challenge of a rapidly developing and changing technological world. They need to develop a variety of IT skills which allow them to harness the power of technology and use it both purposefully and appropriately.

The use of IT will also enhance and extend children’s learning across the whole curriculum. IT motivates children because it is fun. IT takes the laborious routine out of some text and information tasks, thus releasing the constraints on a pupil’s creativity.

Our Aims

For all children to receive equal opportunities to develop practical skills in the use of IT
Computing to be presented as a creative and fascinating process in which children are encouraged to use their own initiative, imagination, reasoning and investigative skills
Support, enhance and extend learning in all subject areas of the National Curriculum
All children to enjoy using IT and tackle all tasks with confidence and a sense of achievement
To use Computing as a specific curriculum area and as a cross curricular tool
That children will learn to work individually and collaboratively online using their GAFE accounts.
Children to have a heightened interest and awareness of Computing through the regular display of their computer enhanced work on the web-site and around the school
To help both pupils and teachers to develop confidence and competence to use Computers in a range of situations and contexts appropriate to tasks in hand

Present Hardware and Software resource provision

Hardware and software for the development of IT capability will be recommended for purchase by the Computing Subject Leader in consultation with the Head-teacher and staff. Curriculum subject leader will identify any additional software required.

Computer Suite and Chromebooks

The school uses chromebooks in the classroom and in the computer suite. The children are able to access the internet and their Google Apps for Education accounts by logging onto the chromebooks.

Web site as a point of linked Resources

The Computing Subject Leader Mrs Croft is constantly developing the school web-site as a point of reference for links to online resources and teaching tools that complement the Primary National Curriculum. The school’s broadband connection means the Internet is an excellent source of activities and teaching tools. The children are able to quickly access online activities both in school and from home.

Safe Internet Use

Internet Safety Links

An Internet policy has been developed in order to allow the safe and efficient use of the Internet for both staff and pupils in an educational context.

An adult is always available to supervise children when they are accessing information via the Internet. The service provider has an internet safe-guard system in place that blocks access to inappropriate sites. Occasionally a search engine may open an unsuitable site. All the children are taught to immediately turn off the monitor and to inform an adult.

Children may need to download images, sound and video files to use in their work. They need an adult’s permission before they do this.

Present Computing curricular organisation

A new Computing Curriculum has been introduced in September 2014. The emphasis will be on developing Computational thinking and an understanding of Computer networks and programming.

Computing Curriculum

The Foundation and Year 1 classes are learning mouse control and keyboard skills and complete a range of activities that complement their in-class studies. They are learning control technology by using the Bee-Bot robots

Children in KS2 learn computing skills in the course of their lessons as well as using art, music, maths and literacy software. They will also use the digital cameras, microphones and scanners in their work.

Children work individually or with a partner. They are usually of matched ability as this makes for more equal interaction. Occasionally the partners may be of mixed ability to enable a more competent child to help those less able (for example in word processing activities in early years)

Computing is not seen as a stick or a carrot (to be withdrawn as a punishment or offered as a reward for good work or behaviour) but is offered as an entitlement for all pupils.

Cross Curricular.

Computer use is integrated into the programme of topics followed throughout the school. 

It is crucial that Computing is seen as a tool that can be used across the whole curriculum, including art, music and R.E. As many opportunities as possible should be taken to use computer applications as part of the study of subject areas, so that it becomes embedded in relevant situations and realistic contexts.

Use of the Computer Suite outside school hours

A computer Club is open to all children in KS2 once a week for an hour after school.

Equal Opportunities.

All children should have access to the use of computers regardless of gender, race, cultural background or physical or sensory disability.

Pupils with Special Educational Needs benefit from using Information Technology as it enhances access to the curriculum. This in turn encourages motivation and they are often able to improve the accuracy and presentation of their work which can raise self-esteem. Therefore, teaching assistants are encouraged to maximise the opportunities to utilise IT with the children they support.

Where use of a school computer proves difficult for a child because of a disability, the school will endeavour to provide specialist equipment and software to enable access.

Pupils of high ability may be extended through the use of programs which offer challenge and opportunities for investigation

Health and Safety

To ensure the health and safety of pupils and staff the following guidelines are adhered to:
Equipment is situated away from water.
Food and drink is not allowed to be consumed near computing equipment
Pupils are always supervised when using electrical equipment.
It is imperative that all electrical equipment is kept in good working order. All plugs, leads and equipment are checked regularly and tested for electrical safety in accordance with County Council guidelines.
Pupils are not allowed to carry equipment.
It is the responsibility of staff to ensure that classroom computing equipment is stored securely, cleaned regularly and that their class or themselves leave the Computer Suite clean and tidy after use.
Staff ensure that the children are seated at the computers comfortably. They are aware of the dangers of continuous use (e.g. eye/wrist strain etc).
Children who complain of headaches or any other form of illness will not be allowed to work on a computer.

Assessment and record keeping

Computing capability should be monitored regularly in relation to the curriculum requirements requirements. The Computing Subject Leader assesses module requirements with reference to the children’s knowledge, understanding and skills.

Staff training needs

Information Technology is a constantly evolving subject and we endeavour to give staff the opportunity to familiarise themselves with new hardware and software as it becomes available in the school.

Staff confidence and expertise will be developed through training sessions provided by the Computing Subject Leader , and external agencies.

The role of the Computing Subject Leader

Arrange technical support for hardware and software
Plan and deliver the Computing curriculum for children in Years R-6
Monitor progress in IT and advise the head teacher on action needed
Support colleagues in their efforts to include Computing in their development of detailed work plans, in their implementation of those schemes of work
Provide basic technical support to colleagues in their use of Computers in the classroom
Take appropriate steps to keep up-to-date with developments in this rapidly changing field and pass on information to colleagues as appropriate.

Future Development

An audit of resources is kept by the Computer Subject Leader to ensure that hardware and software are kept as up to date as possible and that obsolete or broken machines are scrapped or repaired.

Recommendations for purchases to develop the Computing curriculum in the school are made to the Senior Management Team

Future developments to be considered include:

Increase the number of chromebooks in the Classrooms
Purchase Chromeboxes for the Library
Purchase a set of Nexus 7 Tablets
Purchase subscriptions to online sites
Purchase additional sets of Bee-bot floor robots
Update the classroom Interactive white boards
Purchase additional digital camcorders and still cameras for the classrooms
RE modelling of the Computer suite including installation of an 
Air-conditioning system

Review and evaluation procedures

The everyday use of IT is developing rapidly, with new technology being produced all the time. This policy therefore will be reviewed and revised on a yearly basis. The Computing Subject Leader will liaise regularly with staff, both at staff meetings and informally, to monitor the effectiveness of the policy. Meetings with subject co-ordinators will also ensure that the use of IT across the curriculum is planned for and evaluated.
